Implants

Dental implant is when an artificial tooth root is inserted into the jaw bone to replace missing teeth. Implants are similar in form of function and looks to a real tooth. Implants are the new alternative to denture and bridges.

The advantages of dental implants are: replacement of a gap due to loss of a tooth, prevent collapsing or hollowed look of the cheeks after extraction, prevent bone loss in the jaw and loss of space due to tilting teeth. They are usually more comfortable than dentures and do not require separate care or special cleaning products compared with dentures and bridges.

Implants often require comprehensive dental treatment work up, to provide you with the best treatment outcome. You should talk to your dentist and have a consult to review whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. Most people can have dental implants, some exceptions include: bone loss, smoking, pregnancy, uncertain medical conditions, age, alcohol or drug abuse and psychological illnesses.

You may require to have such tests done to confirm you are suitable for the procedure: dental examination, photographs, dental x-ray radiographs, CT scans of your jaw bone and dental casts for your mouth. Treatment for other dental health problems may require to be corrected prior to implant treatment.

As with other procedures, there are risks or complications that could arise from implant surgeries for example: affected sinus, damage to nerve, inhaling or swallowing parts or equipment. Sometimes you could have speech problems, gum tissue overgrowth, local infection, and systemic infection, bone loss, loose implant, loose tooth and other tooth problems. If you have any other concerns, you should seek your dentist for advice.
